7 big trends in social media & communications

Institute for Senior Communications and Marketing Professionals

San Diego on October 12-14, 2011

CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education)

This is the third time I've presented at a CASE conference and no speaker could ask for a more thoughtful audience. This time we talked about how the world's most forward-thinking organizations are engaging their audiences online. We explored seven big trends that are shaping the communications field by dissecting success stories from corporations, mom-and-pops, huge universities and small colleges, including:

1. Fragmentation

2. Using the web for what it's good for: Multimedia content

3. Integration of social sharing into your web content

4. Empowering individuals

5. Using data to track and improve effectiveness

6. Culture eats strategy for lunch: Making it OK to take risks and experiment - with the goal of building skills

7. Once you learn the tools, they change everything

GUEST LECTURE AT UCLA: NONPROFITS IN THE AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

I joined students in a Nonprofit Operations course at UCLA for a discussion on how social media is changing the game for nonprofits. Through an analysis of a series of case studies, we explored how organizations are leveraging the power of new technologies to raise awareness and money -- and better handle crises. CASE District VII presentation: Use social media like a rock star

Advances in technology mean alumni associations and other membership organizations must transform the way they do business or risk becoming irrelevant. Our presentation at the CASE District VII conference March 3-5, 2011, in Los Angeles was created in partnership with UCLA's Joseph Maddela.

Promoting a conference online: Sponsorship, social media, opinion leader outreach and media relations

Our client needed to boost attendance a conference at the last minute, so Haines & Co. put together a public relations and marketing plan that ended up filling the seats with qualified prospects. The good news is that our promotion provided a huge pay-off for our client (we're talking six figures). The even better news is that the resulting visibility cemented our client as a leader in the industry -- giving his firm a huge reputation boost with long-term business benefits.

See the case study below to learn how Haines & Co.'s marketing and public relations outreach made the difference. Want to learn more? See our capabilities. Find out how we can help your company reach your goals by contacting us.

Social media: YouTube channel development

Synopsis: Without their own channels on YouTube, universities miss an opportunity to connect with their target demographics. But can you build an effective channel for a university that’s as large as some cities and comes with a huge decentralized bureaucracy?

We started with three goals:

1. Be useful. (Focus on the user.)
2. Make it easy. (Streamline the process.)
3. Clear everything with legal.

Now the University’s channel has 1,500+ videos and 2.2+ million views, YouTube selected it as a beta-test site and case study and the Wall Street Journal reported on it.

Find out how we did it – and how the “take-aways” from the research and planning can inform every social media effort.
